Homosexuality and the Media There are many different aspects of life that Americans are exposed to on television each day. Some examples are things such as violence, sex and alcohol and in todays more accepting society, the issue of alternative lifestyles. This issue was not as predominant ten years ago as it is today. Yes, for many years there have been sexual undertones in many popular television shows or movies, but it was not until recently that these actors and actresses were actually said to be living an alternative lifestyle. What exactly is an alternative lifestyle? According to Encartas Online World Dictionary, an alternative lifestyle is one of abnormal circumstances, a way of living adopted by people†¦show more content†¦Unfortunately, this style of life had difficulty becoming accepted in a society that is so set in their usual and safe ways. Throughout history gays and lesbians were prosecuted for their beliefs. This was not many centuries ago, but actually less than one hundred years ago, and still today some people are having problems accepting homosexuality. In England, having any homosexual relationship could mean the end of your life, or career. Alfred Bishop from the group called Human Sexualitys in the United States recalls, At one point in time I was afraid to be gay and Im only thirty two years old (Bishop 2). Bishop goes on to further explain his fears, I was interested in reading many different view points of homosexuality, but when I found that homosexuals were prosecuted for th eir beliefs I was terrified (Bishop 3). This is the reaction that many of todays Americans would have, but in the past this would not be as common. As stated above, homosexuality is something that has often been feared in our society. In reality, homosexuality is not a choice, but yet a feeling and a persons emotions (Bishop 4). Why were people prosecuted for their beliefs? One reason is because to many religions, such as the Roman Catholic religions are against homosexual relationships. Another is because it was a way of life that people were not accustomed to (Bishop 3). Fortunately, this is all changing.
